Ridgway State Park
From the desk of John Freeborn, Park Manager
Ridgway State Park is thrilled to share the tremendous impact that the Colorado Parks Foundation (CPF) and its grant program have had on our beloved park, its visitors, and the local community. Their generous support has enriched the experiences we offer, elevating our status as a premier destination for recreation, outdoor education, and community outreach and engagement.
In recent years Ridgway State Park has received 2 grants from the Colorado Parks Foundation. The first grant was for a fleet of blow-up paddleboards and associated safety equipment. These paddleboards have opened up new avenues for children, families, schools, and underserved populations to enjoy the serene and picturesque waters of our reservoir. With this grant funding, we have been able to offer paddle boarding and water safety education activities, making water sports accessible, safe, and enjoyable for everyone—especially kids, families, and beginners. This funding has enhanced and encouraged more people to get outside, explore, and appreciate the beauty of Ridgway State Park and our outdoor spaces.
Additionally, CPF has helped fund an enclosed outdoor education and outreach trailer, which has revolutionized the way we deliver educational programs and public outreach. This mobile unit is equipped with educational materials, our fleet of CPF funded paddleboards, outdoor gear, and hands-on learning supplies allowing us to bring nature-based learning and outdoor activities directly to children, families, schools, and underserved communities. These hands-on experiences and the educational and outdoor materials provided by the trailer have deepened our community's understanding and appreciation of the natural world and awakened an interest in a wide array of outdoor recreational opportunities, serving audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Beyond enhancing recreation and education, these grants have strengthened the sense of community and connection to Ridgway State Park and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Children can now engage in enriching activities, families bond over shared outdoor experiences, schools benefit from comprehensive educational outings, and underserved populations gain access to recreational opportunities previously out of reach.
Colorado Parks Foundation and its grant program has had a significant and positive impact on Ridgway State Park and its visitors. Their contributions have helped expand recreational opportunities, enhance our educational opportunities, improve public outreach, and reinforce our role as a cornerstone of community engagement and environmental stewardship. We are immensely grateful for CPF’s support and look forward to more opportunities to work with them to provide exceptional outdoor experiences for all.
